Mattress sizes explained

What size is a small single mattress?

PERFECT FOR CHILDREN OR OCCASSIONAL GUESTS

The dimensions of a standard small single mattress are 75cm x 190cm, or 2’3 x 6’3 feet. The compact measurements make this size the perfect solution for small bedrooms, where cosy comfort can be provided without sacrificing valuable room space. They are ideal for growing children, space-saving twin beds or more occasional use in guest bedrooms

PERFECT FOR SOLO SLEEPING

Standard single mattress measurements are 90cm x 190cm, or 3 x 6’3 feet, ideal for one person to sleep comfortably. These discreet dimensions make them a popular choice for children’s beds, allowing enough room as little ones grow into teenagers. Single mattresses also provide ample space for solo sleeping adults and represent a practical choice in circumstances where bedrooms may be more compact, such as house shares, studio apartments or guest rooms.

What size is a small double mattress?

PERFECT FOR ONE PERSON AND SPACE-SAVING IN SMALL BEDROOMS

Small double mattresses are 120cm x 190cm, or 4 x 6’3 feet in dimension, and are sometimes referred to as queen size. This is the ideal size if you need to maximise space in a small bedroom, particularly for those sleeping alone but wanting slightly more room than a single bed provides. Couples who prefer to cuddle up in very close quarters may enjoy a small double mattress, however, we'd recommend a double mattress or larger as the best bed size for two people seeking a luxurious sleeping experience.

PERFECT FOR COUPLES AND MID-SIZED BEDROOMS

The dimensions of a double mattress are 135cm x 190cm, or 4’6 x 6’3 feet, which provides ample room for one person to indulge in spacious luxury or two people to snuggle up comfortably for a sound night’s sleep. These measurements make a double mattress the best size to maximise space in a mid-sized bedroom. It’s important to note that double mattresses should only be used for double bed frames, rather than on a king, super king or emperor bed.

What size is a king size mattress?

PERFECT FOR COUPLES, TALLER PEOPLE AND THOSE WHO ENJOY MORE SPACE

The standard dimensions of a king size mattress are 150cm x 200cm, or 5 x 6’6 feet, which is longer and wider than a double mattress and allows a little extra room to luxuriate. The generous measurements are perfect for couples who want to prioritise personal space while still sleeping side-by-side, allowing more unrestricted movement and fewer sleep disturbances. A king size mattress is also the best size for people over 6ft tall, providing plenty of additional space at the foot of the bed.

What size is a super king mattress?

PERFECT FOR COUPLES WHO ENJOY ABUNDANT SPACE AND FAMILIES WHO LIKE TO CUDDLE

Super king size mattress measurements are 180cm x 200cm, or 6 x 6’6 feet, the perfect bed size for couples who enjoy the comfort and luxury of completely unrestricted movement in an abundance of space. It also allows plenty of room for families with children who like to sneak in for a cuddle with their parents. Due to the extra width of a super king size mattress and its corresponding bedframe, it will require a capacious bedroom, so always double check to ensure it will fit in the space you have available.

What size is an emperor mattress?

PERFECT FOR COUPLES AND FAMILIES WHO ENJOY INDULGENT SPACE

Emperor mattress dimensions are 200cm x 200cm, or 6’6 x 6’6 feet, making it the largest mattress size available in the UK. As the name eludes, it represents the ultimate in indulgent luxury. An emperor size mattress offers an unrivalled and vast amount of space, perfect for couples with large bedrooms who prefer to sleep in individual opulence, completely free of confinement and restraint. It’s also the best mattress for homes with multiple children – or pets! – who like to climb into bed for a family-size snuggle.

The best mattress size for single sleepers

For people enjoying a bed all to themselves, there are plentiful choices when it comes to different mattress dimensions. The size you select will depend on your individual sleep needs but will also be largely dictated by the space you have available. It’s vital to take the measurements of your bedroom and understand what will work best alongside your other essential furniture before choosing the right mattress size

In more compact bedrooms, a single or small double mattress is ideal to maximise space while providing a cosy and comfortable night’s rest. If you have the luxury of a bigger bedroom, you may want to indulge in a double or king size mattress, allowing you to spread out and truly relax. For those who live alone, an easy care, non-turn model, such as the Bronte Mattress or Noir Performance Hybrid Mattress, is the best choice as it does not require regular flipping

What mattress size is best for couples?

The best bed size for couples will ultimately be determined by two things: how you like to sleep in relation to each other and the size of your bedroom. A double bed may be adequate for people who like to cuddle up closely as they drift off, or those who need to prioritise floor space in a smaller or mid-sized bedroom. In larger bedrooms and for couples who prefer more room for unrestricted movement, the generous dimensions of a king, super king or emperor provide the next level of luxury and indulgence.

If you and your partner prefer different levels of firmness in a mattress, you may want to consider a split tension or Zip & Link mattress. Split tension allows you to select a different tension for the left and right side of one mattress, while Zip & Link consists of two mattresses attached together, offering completely personal support with the option to separate the mattresses at a later date to use elsewhere.

Mattress sizing tips from our experts

We understand that your mattress is an investment in your health and wellbeing, and it’s important to get it right. Feather & Black’s lead buyer, Laura Burnett, offers the following expert advice to guide you on your way:

“When selecting the best size mattress, you will need to take the body measurements of yourself and your partner into consideration. To avoid anyone’s feet protruding at the foot of the bed, your mattress should be at least 10cm longer than the tallest person. For this reason, a king size or larger is the best bed size for anyone measuring over 6ft.

For the utmost comfort, your mattress should be wide enough for you and your partner to lie side by side, with your hands behind heads, without your elbows touching. Whilst mattress width and length measurements remain consistent, mattress depths can vary, so this is another element to double check when choosing the right mattress for you.

“You should also remember to take the firmness of your mattress into account. This is a very personal choice, but the right level of firmness will ensure your body is evenly supported and your spine is kept perfectly aligned without any pressure being placed upon you. You can find more advice on this in our Mattress Firmness Guide.”

Don’t forget to check if your new mattress will fit

In addition to the size of your bedroom, it’s also important to consider the space you have available to manoeuvre around your home. Whilst your chosen mattress may fit perfectly in your bedroom, you need to be sure that it will pass through the lowest and narrowest restrictions in your house to get there. Check the dimensions of the doorways, the clearance on your stairs and remove any obstructions along the route, such as floor lamps and wall art. You can find more in-depth advice on avoiding unexpected issues when your mattress arrives in this article.
